Clucked!

Here’s a further find from my furious foragings …

They ask if he would care to rule the roost -
Too chicken, me! he says and turns them down.
Responsibility's not quite his thing -
Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

And then they come a-pecking on his door -
Carte blanche, they say, to come and do it his way!
See how they trust him - gullible buffoons! -
So keen are they to have their bright new day!

OK, he gives them that - but just the one -
To wave their little flags and scoff their cakes.
The morning after that, he cracks the whip -
The dream's asleep when real nightmare wakes.

The more it hurts, the deeper their devotion.
O punish us, great monarch, we are dirt!
And never do they seek his abdication,
While each endures the itch of rough hair-shirt.

By then he loves unquestioning obedience,
A pampered prince and lord of all he saw!
They never know their minds - this captive audience! -
Once he's made 'thinking hard' against the law.

They teach his book (on etiquette) in schools.
It tells them what to do and what to say.
They have no need of any other rules.
He whistles as they learn to act his way.

To make them love him more, he stages death -
Pronouncements from the palace, funeral rites -
But lo! a miracle resuscitation,
A strong man never giving up such fights!

And back he comes, a phoenix from the ashes
That bears bold news of bliss beyond the grave -
How only those that do his will may gain it -
How those that disobey him won't be saved.

The royal scam - abandoning commitments
And making sure his subjects feel the blame.
He tears up their petitions, spends their money -
Fast cars and faster persons on the game!

Trial of the Trail

Here’s a 100 word story which I decided had to include the first 3 words that came up on https://randomwordgenerator.com/ – the words were bet, deputy and lose.

We creep in fear and single-file through thick jungle with no choice but trust our navigation to chosen leaders. Night falls and the rearmost urge us onward; we barely notice it’s boggier underfoot. Those furthest forward slow fastest and soon we’re a milling mob.

Uphill, tangled undergrowth; downhill, sunlight through trees. Lead us, we cry, trampling over abandoned machetes.

Each of us, whether demoted or promoted deputy, shares this democracy of incompetence – a bet on survival, ours to lose.

Nightbirds shriek and we stampede towards retreating day. Suddenly chest-deep in quicksand, we hear the crack of metal on wood.

Lost in Space – a story in 100 words

Stars fill our view-port, so many they hang like swathes of Velurian fog. It hurts, now, that none will be a destination.

The starship drifts on, mortally wounded, her ills beyond our skill to cure. We spend whole days watching re-runs of the departure, in which our faces appear torn between sadness at leaving our lovely planet and relief at escaping its catastrophic collision with the giant asteroid.

Nights we can’t sleep for cursing our gross scientific incompetence. Our ship’s breakdown was a corporate failure.

What really rankles, however, is knowing that the asteroid missed Veluria by a million miles.

Waterhole

Here’s a story in 100 words, the first taken from https://randomwordgenerator.com/ to help me sidestep writer’s block! The final word will be the first of another story and so on until I run out of steam …

Far ahead, through desert haze, a glimpse of palm trees!

Beneath green leaves the glint of water, crystalline, clear as glass. Already that cool draught in a dusty throat, it appears, miracle cure for parched lips and dried-up thoughts!

Hopes spring internal and steps quicken – a burst dam flowing downhill – ever faster as though those slow days under pitiless suns were mere moments, forgotten fantasies. Here and now, at long last, real life again!

But the palm trees dance away from us like phantoms. Waters shimmer, shiver, break. Promises are all hot air, our hopes just tricks of the light!
