Family Crest

No one knew what I was called
as strangers set me six feet down,
my headstone one of thousands here all
etched alike and still Unknown.

    1. Indeed. And no one put it better than Wilfred Owen:

      What candles may be held to speed them all?
      Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
      Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
      The pallor of girls’ brows shall be their pall;
      Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
      And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

    1. Thanks, Curt, those losses impacted families for at least two generations – loss of role models, etc. Unfortunately not ‘the war to end all wars’, as was hoped at the time.

      1. Being a bit pessimistic, Dave, I’m not sure we will ever have ‘the war to end all wars’ unless we manage to wipe out humanity. Maybe we can evolve. Or maybe the machines will take over. –Curt

        1. A fair reading, Curt, given what has happened in the 100 years since then. I suspect any evolution may follow the development of shared values but, like you, I’m not holding my breath …

          1. I’ve always been a great fan of enlightened self-interest, Dave. If only people could learn to look forward far enough to see the implications of their actions. –Curt

          2. I can get there, Dave. I shall listen. Two areas are of particular interest: Climate Change and tobacco. On the latter, I had years of experience battling the Tobacco Industry lies! –Curt
