As someone who tries – and frequently fails – to post on WordPress at least once a week, I decided to look at the sites I follow to see how often they publish. How long was it since their most recent post?
The results of this little survey surprised me. Just 13% had posted within the previous 24 hours. The other 87% had posted as follows:
13% in the last week
14% in the last month
36% in the last year
10% in the last two years
14% no information, presumably deleted
Another way to look at this, I suppose, is that 40% are frequent or infrequent bloggers and 60% are no longer active. It seems harsh to unfollow people but I’d like to whittle down the list so that I can concentrate on those who publish fairly regularly.
How does this compare with your experience, I wonder, and how would you deal with the percentile categories above? All comments gratefully received!

You are sensitive to the feelings of other bloggers, which is kind. But if blogs aren’t active, unfollow by all means! Most blogs only last a few years. Priorities change and that’s fine.

As I enter year 7 of blogging, I started looking at the blogs I follow. 50% no longer exist or have not posted in the last year. That’s a little startling, but also a reminder that I’ve not reached out to find more blogs of interest to follow, which is a necessary to be part of a blogging community.
For my own blog, I go in fits and spurts. I post 2-7 times a month, but I plan on raising that number in 2019 with more posts scheduled in advance.

Thanks for that, Michelle. Your point about reaching out to new blogs is interesting – not something I’ve done much, unless someone has followed me and I find something of interest in theirs.

I don’t always succeed, Dave, but I try to post 2-3 times per week. In terms of overall posting, this past week may not be the best time to evaluate people’s posting habits since lots of folks are tied up in holiday activities. I don’t care about activity or inactivity since it has little to no impact on my blog. But I try to always follow up on comments, and as much as possible, keep up with the people I follow. The latter can be impacted by things like backpacking 700 miles. (grin) –Curt

You’re absolutely right about the seasonal pressures, Curt, so I’ve resolved to carry out another survey in the new year when folk might return to the fray. Congratulations, by the way, on the consistency of your posts which never sacrifice quality in the interests of frequency! Maybe the active lifestyle feeds into that?
